Using the Strengths of All Parts (SOAP) Chart Workshop

A trauma-informed strengths-based approach to working with complex trauma

Taught By Sara Stein, MS, MSW, LMSW, RYT & Sharon Gold-Steinberg, PhD

Using the Strengths of All Parts (SOAP) Chart Workshop:

Join Sara F. Stein, MS, MSW, LMSW, RYT, of Strengths of All Parts—in a special collaboration with Dr. Sharon Gold-Steinberg, co-creator of The Resourced Therapist—as she guides you through clinical applications of the Strengths of All Parts (SOAP) Chart, an adaption of Janina Fisher, PhD’s psychoeducational tool for explaining the theory and treatment goals of the structural dissociation model to clients who have survived complex or developmental trauma. This video of a recorded workshop from the fall of 2020 also offers meditative resourcing and experiential learning for clinicians.

This course is designed for therapists eager to enhance their knowledge and skill in helping clients to deal with the inevitable fragmentation of self that can result from early trauma, abuse, or neglect. The presenters affirm the survival value of dissociation and offer hope by explaining Dr. Fisher’s steps to enhance “inner teamwork” and to create an “internalized secure attachment.”

FAQs

What does a strength-based parts work approach offer clients?

Integrating the SOAP chart in your practice offers clients:

  • A way to make sense of conflicting feelings and impulses

  • Affirmation that how they survived early trauma was adaptive

  • Hope that they they can improve the “inner teamwork” of parts of self

  • A trauma-informed perspective that emphasizes resilience

Do I need to be a trauma specialist to implement strength-based parts work in my practice?

The strategies of the SOAP chart integrate easily with many theoretical orientations to clinical work, even for those clinicians who don't specialize in trauma treatment.

  • The use of mindfulness and externalization of symptoms will be familiar to CBT therapists.

  • Insights about inner conflict and defenses against overwhelming emotions will resonate with psychodynamic therapists.

  • Helping clients hold and attempt to resolve conflicting objectives will integrate with interventions of motivational interviewing.

  • Those wishing to deepen their skills in parts work, are encouraged to explore trainings offered by Janina Fisher, PhD or the Internal Family Systems Institute.

Is this approach primarily for clients with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)?

DID represents one end of a continuum of fragmentation of self. However, as complex humans, we can all relate to the metaphor of different or sometimes conflicting parts of self. We find the SOAP chart to have particular relevance for survivors of early or complex trauma, while also having applicability for many of our clients without trauma histories as well.

Do I need to have previous experience in doing parts work to use the SOAP chart?

No. The workshop provides an accessible introduction to the topic of strengths-based parts work. In fact, it both introduces this approach to therapists and models language for how to incorporate the SOAP chart in clinical work with clients.

“Integrating parts work into my practice has transformed my work. It has strengthened my ability to be compassionate and connect with clients no matter ‘who’ is showing up, to work more effectively in the here-and-now, and to guide holistic healing.”

—Carryn Lund, LMSW, RYT

“I am a therapist/social worker from Michigan. I purchased the Strength of All Parts chart/materials and I completed the training through the Resourced Therapist. It has helped to integrate this tool in the work with my clients and help them understand the different parts of themselves and how they show up in their lives. I see this training as helpful for my clients because they have another way to see themselves that is not about a problem to solve but a more compassionate/empathetic way to see themselves. It also has helped to reframe their actions as a way to stay safe/connected instead of feeling something is wrong. It really helps to reduce shame and stigma along with creating a more friendly and loving way to relate to themselves. I would highly recommend this training.”
